Reflections on fall and age
October at Oak Crest
for decades fall has signified a transition at Oak Crest just as it has in many households.
We decorate and plan for festive parties
and hosting the kids for trick or treats.
Age is a great equalizer,
what many people don't realize is that age has it's rewards:
Being silly comes easier.
Expectations are not set in stone.
Memories are there to fall back on.
Accepting what is makes sense.
Joy is more meaningful.
Twilight is welcome.
Rest is a gift.
Life is now.

Happy Fathers Day
On Sunday families will take time out to honor FATHER. No matter what age of father or child, there holds special significance for the person whom we think of as our father. Not always biological. not always a relative, but that special man who has guided and held fast to the principles that represent strength.
Strength to lead and teach and most importantly to love us. To those who have never known a dad or grandfather, I am among you. But what I do know is the friendship of men who have been willing to step up and fill that void. So this Fathers Day take a moment to remember and say thanks to all who have taken on the mantel of fatherhood and embraced it's sacred responsibility.

Memorial Day at Oak Crest Atrium

Normally veterans receive a flag at the time of their funeral, but it is this wonderful Pillars of Freedom Foundation organization's
mission to give Vets the chance to publicly receive that gift on Memorial Day. Oak Crest was honored to have the chance to show our own Vets how much their service was appreciated. Thanks to Steve and the folks at the Pillars of Freedom Foundation the program included many proud smiles and many beautiful flags. This is the way I remember Memorial Day being as a kid. Red, White and Blue (no sales) just preserving the honor of the men and women who not only gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms, but those who walk among us today, many times unidentified and unappreciated. This Memorial Day, our halls were filled with pride and Vets and their families all receiving "thanks" for some overdue and for others their simply cannot be too many "thank yous". The lawn flag display, also compliments of the Pillars of Freedom Foundation was in it's old glory with over 50 flags flying, proudly.

Let's Get the Ball Rolling
We need your help.
A community member and partner since 1904 Oak Crest has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of older adults and their families. But there is more to the story than just older adults.
Volunteers of all ages spend their valuable free time here. They do all sorts of kind and interesting things with the members who call Oak Crest home. they help with reading and go on visits, they sing and dance and do impromptu skits to make us laugh. Our friends give us gifts too. Lots of different things like art supplies and bingo prizes, Christmas gifts and cars,;and now we need some new chairs for the Atrium. So it is time to get that ball rolling. It is a big task but with many friends it will be possible and once again our members will be the grateful recipients of your generosity.

New Chairs for Oak Crest Atrium- The Chair Campaing
THE CHAIR
THE WINDSOR CHAIR was selected by King George II to be reproduced by his carpenters after stopping at a local farmhouse and using the chair that had been made and used by the farmer. As legend goes, the chair then gained widespread popularity and eventually made it's way to the new world. Used by our forefathers while drafting the declaration of independence and favored for it's comfort, ease of movement and reliability.
The Chair Campaign
The Windsor is the chair Oak Crest has chosen for the Atrium. The replacement process for 35 chairs is a major undertaking. We will be working with the Riverbend Chair Company in Ohio to obtain our chairs. Working directly with the maker we have striven to keep costs down, but anyone who has ever purchased a quality handmade piece of furniture knows it is a costly endeavor.
That is where you come in, to insure the success of the Chair Campaign we will be asking for help.
Raising money is never an easy task, but we believe that the need and use of our campaign will speak for itself. Members use their chairs for meals and Atrium gatherings, they are visible at all times; but possibly the most compelling reason to support our cause is the frugal approach we take to chairs. In the past one hundred and ten years this is only the third time we have had new dining chairs.
